Flower Bouquet Care – 5 Essential Tips

We often want a nice gesture or the memory of a beautiful moment to last as long as possible, and flower bouquets are no exception. Flowers are a special gift for any special occasion in life. But what do we do when we want the bouquet we received or carefully chosen to stay fresh for longer?

At TRAVÁ Atelier Florist, we know how precious the tenderness and quality of flower care are. Plants don't last forever, but we can do a few simple and effective tricks to maintain their longevity!

It is important to know that the freshness and lifespan of a bouquet of flowers depend on several factors: the type of flowers chosen, how they are prepared, and the care conditions after purchase.

The good news? Even though they are delicate by nature, by applying a few simple rules, you can keep them in good condition for longer. Here are 5 tips for effectively caring for your flower bouquet:

Remove the film and cut the flower stems correctly

If you received a complex bouquet with multiple types of flowers and it is wrapped, we recommend that you first remove the flowers' packaging and cut the ribbon around them. This way you will not strangle them, allowing air to pass through them.

However, if it is exposed to low temperatures, we recommend keeping it in its packaging to protect it from the cold.

Although it seems like a good idea, it is not enough to just put them in water. Cutting the stems is recommended to increase the surface area for water absorption (from the stem). Thus, cut about 1-2 cm of the stems diagonally, preferably under the water jet.

A clean vase prevents the accumulation of bacteria

Whether you are purchasing custom-made flowers in Oradea or another city, to maintain the freshness of the bouquet, it is very important to place them in a clean vase so that bacteria do not compromise the resistance of the flowers.

Depending on the vase or bouquet, you should change the water every two to three days. To clean the vase, you can use baking soda or chlorine. Isn't that simple? And, on top of that, effective, because it will prevent the formation of an environment conducive to the growth of bacteria.

Add preservative to flower water

If you purchase TRAVÁ flower bouquets, you will receive a sachet with a preservative as a gift, which must be mixed in a clean container, after which you can safely place the plants. It is recommended that the water be changed every three days, but without adding any preservative.

One packet of these preservatives dissolves in a liter of water. The good thing about them is that they can increase the lifespan of flowers by up to 50 percent - so they're worth using.

Choose a suitable place: optimal temperature and light for flowers

It may seem like a minor detail, but where you choose to place your bouquet has a major impact on its lifespan. Avoid exposing it to direct sunlight or near heat sources, such as radiators, appliances, or brightly lit windows.

Flowers prefer environments with constant, moderate temperatures – ideally between 10 and 15°C – where they can maintain their freshness without the stress of extreme variations. If the room gets too hot during the day, move the bouquet to a cooler corner, and at night you can place it in a lightly ventilated space, away from light.

In addition to temperature, light also plays a role. A bouquet placed under bright light bulbs or near a constant source of artificial lighting will wilt more quickly.

We recommend placing the bouquet in a bright place, but away from direct sunlight. If necessary, you can use drapes or curtains to filter the sunlight and protect the bouquet, or you can choose a darker room where the lights are not turned on often.

Don't forget about hydration: change the water regularly and refresh the stems

To keep your bouquet fresh for as long as possible, it is essential to ensure proper hydration. To summarize, change the water in the vase every two to three days, using a clean container, to prevent the growth of bacteria.

At the same time, cut a few centimeters off the flower stems again, diagonally (one centimeter for flowers with a smaller stem and 2-3 cm for those with a larger stem). This will stimulate their water absorption capacity, helping the flowers maintain their vitality and well-groomed appearance for longer.

The most resistant flowers in a vase

Every plant has a limited lifespan in a vase, but with proper care, some species can last for several weeks. Here are some examples:

- Lilies have an average lifespan of 6–8 days, requiring refreshing the stem and changing the water daily.

- Carnations are very durable flowers, staying fresh for up to 14 days. It is important that the water is clean and changed regularly.

- Orchids (especially Phalaenopsis) last 10–14 days in a vase, if kept at constant temperatures and away from direct light.

- Chrysanthemums can last between 7 and 14 days, being resistant to moderate fluctuations in temperature and humidity.

- Freesias and lisianthus have a lifespan of 7–10 days, but they need a clean container and avoid exposure to excessive heat.

The durability of these flowers depends on factors such as proper stem cutting, water quality, ambient temperature, and avoidance of direct sunlight. With minimal care, bouquets can remain fresh and aesthetic for a longer period of time.

In conclusion, to make your bouquet last as long as possible, choose to take a few simple actions that will make a difference.

The key points are cutting the flower stems: in the case of woody stems, cut the stem at 45°, and in other cases, cutting at 90° is sufficient. Next, clean the vase, add preservative, take care of the temperature, the light of the room and try to change the water of the flowers every 2-3 days, periodically shortening the flower stems diagonally.

Know that simple things – like washing the vase – make a difference. And if you need custom-made flowers with home delivery in Oradea or premium flower bouquets, TRAVÁ Atelier florist is your trusted choice.
